Ovi Store goes live on N900 and Maemo |
Nokia has just announced that users of its Nokia N900 Maemo-based handset can now enjoy access to various applications via the Ovi Store. The company has recently delivered a new software update for the N900 mobile phone, bringing the Ovi Store on all handsets out there, and now it reveals the first applications developed for the Maemo platform and available for download via the software portal.

The Nokia N900 SDK V1.2 update is expected to hit later this week and will bring with it a host of changes to the core OS. However, it looks like the release won?t be offering support for dual-boot with the upcoming MeeGo OS.

Nokia announced today that the N900 can be pre-ordered in Singapore from now to Mar 26 from Available for S$999, the Maemo-based device has a ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. It comes with 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB with a microSD card.

Mobile advertising firm Greystripe has announced plans to support in-app ads on Nokia’s Ovi Store – its third smartphone platform after iPhone and Android. The company says it’s starting to migrate 1,200 ad-supported Java games from its own GameJump service to Ovi Store, and will also make its ad units available for use in Symbian games released through Nokia’s service.
By 2011 only 10% of Nokia's devices would be based on Maemo
By 2011, smartphones based on the Symbian S60-platform will account for 55% of Nokia’s total handset shipments, followed by Symbian S40 feature phones at 35% and Maemo-based devices at 10%. Nokia also plans to launch Maemo 6-based products in the second half of 2010 according to Michael Hsu, general manager of Nokia Taiwan.
